How to Safely Sell Your Phone or Laptop Locally

Selling locally is the fastest way to get cash for your phone or laptop — but "locally" makes some people nervous. Meeting a stranger with a $600 device feels risky if you haven't done it before. The good news: a few straightforward steps make local selling as safe as any other transaction. Here's exactly what to do.

Before the Sale: Protect Your Data

This is the most important step and the one most sellers skip. Before your device changes hands, you need to erase your personal data and sign out of your accounts. On an iPhone:

  • Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out to remove your Apple ID
  • Or go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings
  • Make sure iCloud Activation Lock is off — the buyer needs to be able to set up the device fresh

On a Mac laptop:

  • Apple Silicon: System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings
  • Intel Mac: Restart into Recovery Mode (hold Cmd+R on boot), open Disk Utility, erase the drive, then reinstall macOS

On a Windows laptop, go to Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove Everything. Choose "Remove files and clean the drive" for the most thorough wipe.

If the device won't turn on and you can't do these steps yourself, tell the buyer. A reputable buyer will handle data destruction on their end — and should be willing to confirm that in writing or verbally before the transaction.

Where to Meet

Always meet in a public, well-lit location. The best options:

  • Police station lobby or parking lot — most cities and towns have a lobby open during business hours. This is the safest possible spot and a legitimate buyer will never object to it.
  • Bank lobby — useful if you're receiving cash, since you can verify bills and deposit immediately
  • Busy retail parking lots — Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Publix — high foot traffic and cameras
  • Public library — quiet, staffed, and neutral

Never meet at a private residence — yours or theirs — unless you have an established relationship with the buyer. A good buyer will suggest a public spot before you even ask.

During the Transaction

Bring your phone or laptop in its current state — don't agree to hand it over and "get paid later." Legitimate buyers have payment ready before they meet you. The transaction should be simple: they inspect the device, confirm it matches what was described, and you both complete the payment immediately — cash, Zelle, Cash App, or Apple Pay.

If a buyer shows up and tries to renegotiate the price significantly without a real reason — "oh, I didn't realize the battery was this low" on a phone that boots fine — that's a red flag. A good buyer locks in a fair price before the meetup and only adjusts if the condition is materially different from what was described.

After the Sale

If you received cash, count it before you hand over the device. If you received Zelle, confirm the transfer arrived in your account before they leave. These are standard practices that any legitimate buyer will expect and respect.

That's really it. Local selling has a reputation for being complicated or risky, but with the right buyer, it's one of the smoothest transactions you can do — faster than eBay, more cash than a kiosk, and done in under an hour.
